Principal's Update: Term 2, Week 9
For those who are new enough to remember their enrolment interview, you will remember me sharing with you the concept of holistic education. It is the equal valuing of academic excellence, the social and emotional wellbeing of our students, the physical and creative domains of education and the spiritual and Christian underpinnings of all that we do. I acknowledge that this can become a cliché, but it is the best description of the overall package or educational product we offer at CCAS.
Last week, our Secondary students were given the opportunity to opt into a Creative Arts Camp, run by our Creative Arts and Chaplaincy team held at Avondale University, culminating in our showcase night, The Alive, last Thursday evening. More than 50 students from Year 7 – 12 presented what they had worked on during the 3-day camp across the creative domains of music, film, drama and dance – the performing arts. It was such a great example of one component of holistic education, and I wanted to acknowledge the efforts of our students and staff in this important area of our school's program. Well done, and I am sure the close to 300 who attended the night would agree. We have wonderfully talented students and staff in all areas of the educational sphere that make up our school community and remain committed to delivering holistic education for all.
Hoping you enjoy the rest of this week’s newsletter as we navigate the final two weeks of the term.

Basketball BNSW Regional Championships (Open Boys and Girls)
Two teams of CCAS students ventured to Maitland recently for the Basketball NSW Regional Championships. This is the first event in the BNSW pathway where winning teams progress to the State Championships in Penrith later this month.
The Open Girls started their BNSW campaign strongly where they walked through Catherine McAuley Catholic College 74-6 to start the day. Their second game saw them have a rematch with Central Coast Sports College after defeating them in the HRIS Grand Final the week prior. The girls again managed to control the game and moved the ball well taking it out 36-25. The final pool match against Hunter Christian School allowed the girls to play their style of offence and tighten up their communication on defense, taking the win 67-25. The girls progressed to the grand final where they yet again competed against Central Coast Sports College in a tough match, ultimately taking a four-point lead to win 31-27.
After winning the Regional Championships the girls will progress to the State Championships on the 25-26th June down in Penrith.
Good luck girls!
The Open Boys team faced a tough St Edwards College in the first pool match for Division 1. With some players out due to injury and illness it was challenging to find a balance of positions on the floor and this led to a slow start in the first half. With a stronger second half the deficit was reduced and ended in a 17 point loss (42-59). The second match against Catherine McAuley Catholic College allowed the boys to get into some better rhythm and play their own style, run our systems in the half court and push the ball up the court on transition. The momentum of this win (47-28) was short-lived with another slow start against St Columba in the final pool match. After beating St Columba recently at HRIS, the boys struggled to match with equal aggression and intensity. After being down by as many as 14 points, a couple of late steals and a critical three-pointer from Dylan Tea, the deficit was reduced to 1 point. With 10 seconds left in the game the boys defensive intensity forced another turnover and allowed for Finlay Exton and Oscar Puckeridge to both have scoring opportunities that fell short due to high physical contact. With no foul calls going in the boys' favour, there was no opportunity to win the game at the free throw line and the loss (40-41) lead to not making it through to the grand final. The boys will have their next opportunity to get healthy and compete against St Edwards as well as other local schools at the Central Coast Basketball Challenge early next term.
The Open Boys season record now stands at 11-4 and the Open Girls are effectively at 14-1 from tournament games.

Interschool Science And Engineering Challenge Day
On Wednesday, June 19, 24 students from across Years 9 and 10 attended the annual Science and Engineering Challenge Day at St Edwards College in East Gosford. Teams of 2 - 4 students collectively participated in 8 challenges throughout the day, with most teams competing in two separate events.
The challenges included creating and testing a balsa wood glider, encoding messages using pulses of coloured light, building a lightweight bridge to support a rolling trolley, designing a structure from straws and tape to withstand a simulated earthquake and trying to find the most efficient way to power a network of cities. New challenges for 2024 saw students creating networks of rocks to catch certain numbers and sizes of 'fish' and creating an effective wind turbine.
All students put in their best effort, employing an array of teamwork and problem-solving skills. After the first set of challenges, CCAS had a narrow lead and ended up placing 2nd overall at the end of the day. This is an excellent achievement and congratulations are extended to all those involved.
Any current Year 9 students who think they may be interested in participating in this challenge day in 2025 are encouraged to speak to their Science teacher.

Year 8 Technology - Food/Agriculture
Year 8 students have been growing their own herbs and vegetables to use in their practical work in Technology. Here they created a healthy meal (that they would like to eat) that used their garden produce.
The purple carrots were gorgeous.

Success At CIS High School Cross Country
We are proud to announce that two of our students, Caleb Lewis and Robbie Exton, recently competed in the CIS High School Cross Country. Despite the challenging conditions of a wet and muddy track, both athletes performed admirably, showcasing their determination and skill.
Caleb Lewis placed 27th in the under 15 boys category, and Robbie Exton placed 28th in the under 16 boys category. Their achievements at this highly competitive level are a testament to their hard work, dedication, and perseverance.
Making it to the CIS High School Cross Country is a significant accomplishment, and we celebrate Caleb and Robbie for their impressive performances. Congratulations to both athletes for representing our school with pride and distinction. We look forward to seeing their continued success in future events.

HRIS Junior Girls Soccer Gala Day
Last week at Maitland, our junior girls competed in the HRIS Gala Day. The team played with determination and skill, finishing 7th overall after being knocked out in a penalty shoot-out during the finals.
A special mention goes to Annabel and Isabella, our Year 11 student coaches for the day, who provided excellent guidance and support. Parents and supporters created a positive atmosphere, cheering the team on throughout the day.

Central Coast Oztag Gala Day
CCAS years 7-10 competed at the annual Central Coast Oztag Gala on Tuesday and Thursday this week. Four teams competed over two days, and all students represented CCAS with enthusiasm and integrity.
Highlights:
Intermediate Boys (Years 9/10) finished best of the four teams making the quarter-finals after a tough-fought draw against Terrigal High in their final pool round game.
Junior Girls (Years 7 & 8) lost their first game of the pool round but won their next three games. They were very unfortunate not to progress to the quarter finals, only missing out by 2 fore and against points.
Junior Boys and Intermediate Girls had some great wins and close games against some of the bigger public and independent schools here on the Central Coast.
All students are to be congratulated for their effort, enthusiasm, and dedication to the day. It was a pleasure to coach them for this event.

Bush to Beach: 600km Walk for Blood
Scott Worgan, Dad to our students Scarlet, Sienna and Mace will soon be walking 600 km from his hometown of Inverell, Northern NSW to Terrigal on the Central Coast. This is to raise awareness of the importance of blood donations.
"Our gorgeous daughter Sienna (SJ) was always the life of the party, but that spark was almost all but blown out when she was diagnosed with Leukaemia in August last year. Since her diagnosis SJ has received 30 blood transfusions. Like many cancer patients, SJ requires blood transfusions due to low blood cell counts caused by chemotherapy treatment and the cancer itself.
But, SJ isn’t alone. One in three Aussies will need blood during their lifetime, however, only 3% donate today.
My goal is to change this. "
