I rarely discuss similar themes back-to-back in our school newsletter; however, I want to reflect on the important Safe on Social student and parent presentations we had last week, run by Kirra Pendergast.
I want to start by saying a big thank you to those who attended the parent afternoon session. I am sure you would all agree on how relevant, beneficial (and a little bit scary) the presentation was. I am just sorry not every parent could attend (or that I had access to this information when I was raising my children through the teenage years, for that matter). The student sessions were equally relevant and engaging for Years 5-10. However, we need you as parents to be on the same page as your children. To provide and sometimes enforce the boundaries necessary to keep our children safe. The good news is, with Kirra’s permission, we were able to record the parent session and will share this with you (most likely) through the SEQTA Engage Portal. We also post a range of resources from ‘Safe on Social’ in the same space for your information and benefit.
I do not want to speak too much into this space -as I do not consider myself an expert- but let me share a couple of my takeaways relating to our children’s health and wellbeing.
Firstly, hold off as long as possible before allowing your child to sign up for a social media platform. The legal age is 13, but if your child signs up earlier than this it requires them to falsify their date of birth. This is something that sits permanently in their digital footprint and may impact future employment opportunities, not to mention the clear message it sends regarding integrity. While 13 is the legal age it still does not mean they are ready to responsibly navigate the online world safely.
Secondly, set boundaries for when and how long your children are online either through the App settings if you are still in control of this, or as part of your household rules. Have a curfew and a place where everyone puts their devices and keep these devices out of the bedrooms. Not only do kids need a break from technology, but you as parents have a right to know what they are doing on social media.
There is so much more I could pass on, but please take a look for yourself. One of the daily realities we face as a school is that we cannot be responsible for what your children do in the online space once they leave school each day. We need your support to support your children. Both to protect them from the dangers of the online world and teach them to be responsible users.
Technology is a reality of the world we live in. It has many advantages but, as with everything, it also brings its challenges. The answer lies in good education and good parenting. Let’s partner in this journey together.

Youth In Performing Arts Concerts 2024
We are so proud of our Vocal Ensemble and Senior Band who were selected to participate in YIPA 2024.
Youth in Performing Arts, or YIPA, has been an important event on the Central Coast since 1992. This annual series of concerts, held at the Laycock Street Community Theatre every May, showcases the talents of youth performers in areas such as music, dance and drama.
Our Vocal Ensemble performed on Wednesday, May 22nd, and our Senior Band took to the stage on Thursday, May 23rd.
We would also like to congratulate all our students and community members involved in this event, including Sophia Haydar, Micah Patch, Lily Weir, and many others who performed with various dance groups and ensembles across the Central Coast.
Well done to all of our performers for their dedication and excellent performances.

HRIS Secondary Cross Country
The recent HRIS Cross Country event, held at Avondale University, was a resounding success! Despite initial concerns about the weather, we were fortunate to experience clear skies and mild temperatures, creating ideal conditions for our athletes to showcase their abilities.
Students from various schools across the region gathered to compete, each displaying remarkable determination and sportsmanship. The scenic trails of Avondale University provided a challenging yet enjoyable course, with runners navigating through picturesque landscapes and diverse terrains.
Our school’s athletes put in an incredible effort, resulting in some pleasing performances. Their hard work and dedication in training were evident as they crossed the finish line with commendable times and placements. Notably, those who positioned in the top 10 have qualified for the AICES Cross Country, an impressive achievement that speaks volumes about their talent and perseverance.
Below are the detailed results of our school’s athletes who have qualified for the AICES Cross Country:
Caleb Lewis - 15YO Boys - 1st place
Jesse Roder - 17YO Boys - 2nd place
Matilda Cohen - 16YO Girls - 4th place
Robbie Exton - 16YO Boys - 5th place
Logan Lorrentz - 14YO Boys - 7th place
Annabelle Hedger - 17YO Girls - 9th place
There is also a team component of the cross country. A team's score is determined by adding the finishing positions of the top four runners from each team. The team with the lowest total score wins. We have two teams that have qualified for the AICES Cross Country. They are:
12 Boys: Roman Agafonoff, Lucas Agafonoff, Zach Harding, Lysander Heise
17 Girls:Sari Abel, Charley Collins, Annabelle Hedger, Indiana Martin
Congratulations to all our runners for their fantastic performances and for representing our school with such pride and spirit!

Primary Paul Kelly Cup AFL
Last Thursday was a thrilling day of Aussie Rules football as our school participated in the Paul Kelly Cup AFL competition. With three teams representing us, our young CCAS athletes showcased incredible skill, determination, and sportsmanship.
Our 5/6 girls team played extremely well throughout the day, showing significant improvement with every game. Their hard work and perseverance paid off as they secured a commendable 3rd place overall. Well done, girls!
The 5/6 boys B team also put on a strong performance. They played with great spirit and determination, managing to win one out of their four games. Their effort and enthusiasm were evident on the field, and they should be proud of their performance.
The 5/6 boys A team had an exceptional day, remaining undefeated in all their matches leading up to the grand final. Their teamwork and skill were outstanding, and they fought hard in every game. Unfortunately, they faced a tough opponent in the grand final and narrowly missed out on the top spot. Congratulations to the boys for their incredible effort and for making it to the final!
Thank you to all the players, our teachers Mr Cashin and Mr Davis, and our supporters for making this day fantastic. We are incredibly proud of all our teams and look forward to more exciting competitions in the future.

Girls Basketball: CIS Team Selection
Congratulations to Annabelle Hedger and Amelie Boonstra who not only represented CCAS but also the HRIS and AICES at the CIS Basketball Trials.
These trials see the top basketball players who attend Independent Schools in NSW take to the court with the aim of being selected for the CIS NSW team to compete against the top students from the Public and Catholic School systems.
Making these trials is a significant achievement and underscores the work that the girls have put in their own time, in both the Gosford City Rebels program and the CCAS Basketball program.
It is well worth mentioning that Amelie was successful in being selected for the U16 Girls CISNSW team.
Well done girls!

Basketball Exhibition Match: Wahroonga vs CCAS
This past week, one of the Senior Boys basketball teams faced off against Wahroonga Adventist School in a highly anticipated match at our Sports Centre. The lunchtime game drew a great crowd of students who were eager to support their peers.
Our boys came out strong from the start, looking great when in transition down the floor. When things slowed down in the half court it was a great opportunity to run through our systems and gain feedback on where we need to tighten things up. In the end the boys won 65-21 and have set the bar high for the next time these teams will face one another later in the year.
The significance of this match extended beyond continuing the ongoing series we have in place with Wahroonga, it provided essential preparation for the upcoming HRIS and BNSW State Championship tournaments.
Looking ahead, the excitement continues this Wednesday as we welcome Central Coast Sports College for some challenging matchups. Both our Senior Girls and Senior Boys teams will take to the court, continuing to foster the local rivalry on the coast. These matches are helping push each other to new heights and building both our programs further.
Stay tuned for more updates and join us in supporting our teams as they strive for excellence both on and off the court. Go CCAS!

CCAS Exchange Program
We still have exchange students from ‘Students of the World’ Exchange program looking for host families.
Our CCAS students get to interact and build friendships with these students. For some of our early exchanges, these friendships have now spanned a decade, with Australian families visiting the exchange family in their home country.
If you and your family are interested in hosting a student from Estonia, Germany, Italy, Spain, or France sometime this winter, please email Mrs Grange (marilyn.grange@ccas.nsw.edu.au) for
Thank you for considering this enriching opportunity!

Nationally Consistent Collection Of Data On School Students With Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
