Principal's Update: Term 1, Week 8
It is that time of year again – NAPLAN – the annual standardised tests that students in Years 3,5,7 and 9 sit each year across the nation. Last week our students sat these tests which provide us with a comparative snapshot of a child’s progress and development across Literacy and Numeracy, the foundations of so many aspects of education. Although we encourage our students to take these tests seriously, thus giving us this important insight into their progress, it should always be kept in context, and achievement in these tests is just one measure of progress and should not define a student. Here at CCAS we do utilise student NAPLAN results, along with other annual standardised testing and importantly school-based assessments, tests and exams, to both monitor the progress of our students and the effectiveness of our program and teaching – always with an eye to continuous improvement. All this is to ensure each student here is given the best possible education and fulfils their potential – regardless of where they sit across the academic spectrum of achievement.
Today we also kick off our Week of Spiritual Emphasis (WOSE) program. For those new to our community, WOSE happens each day, in a similar format to our weekly chapels, with a guest speaker and student-led praise and worship. It is always a spiritual highlight of our school calendar and we look forward to what our Chaplaincy team have prepared for our students and staff.
The term is rushing along – we are now in week 8. Hoping you enjoy this week’s newsletter.

Principal
WOSE Begins Today!
We are so excited for our first Week of Spiritual Enlightenment to kick off today.
We will be celebrating and worshiping as a school community all of this week and even into the weekend, with our Summit on Friday night for the high school students and WOSE Church service on Saturday from 10 am in the hall where everyone is welcome.

Harmony Week: Primary School
It's Harmony Week this week and we have some great things planned that we can't wait to share with you all.
If there are any parents (or grandparents) still interested in coming in on Wednesday to share about their culture, please reach out to the classroom teacher beforehand. Places are limited.
We are looking forward to learning, sharing and celebrating cultural diversity together as a school during this year's Harmony Week.

Thredbo MTB Interschools
CCAS recently competed at the Thredbo Interschools in both High School and Primary categories. Over 1500 students were competing throughout the week at this competition in the Flow, All Mountain and Downhill events.
Whilst some students had the odd crash, we all came back in one piece, which was pleasing. The success of the event was measured by the smiles on students' faces and the stories they have from a great week of riding on some of Australia's Premier gravity trails.
Congratulations to all the students who competed.

Primary CIS Basketball Trials
Congratulations to Max P, Elias PB, Jack U and Nixon T for being selected to attend the CIS Basketball trials. Unfortunately, Nixon could not attend due to illness.
The others represented CCAS and HRIS with great energy and enthusiasm but were unsuccessful in being selected for the team.

Secondary HRIS Open Girls Soccer Trials
A big congratulations to Annabel Goodman and Isabella Beresford who were both selected for the Open Girls HRIS Soccer team.

A Big Week For 3S
We had a huge week in 3S.
We have been revising our multiplication, reading amazing stories, learning how to infer a text and have charged through 3 huge days of Naplan!
We have been instructed on dot paintings by high school teacher, Mr Burke, and have begun our art projects on the Hawksbill Turtle - which we have been researching in science.
Great work Year 3!

PVDI Japanese Gardens Excursion
Last Monday, 16 Year 11 students travelled to the Japanese Gardens at East Gosford to participate in fieldwork for their digital imaging class.
Here they used school DSLRs to take a range of photos in an outdoor setting. These photos will be edited back at school before being submitted. This is one of several local trips before they travel to Sydney in June for a full day and night excursion during Sydney Vivid.

CCAS Exchange Program Update
There are three host students due to arrive in Australia on the 20th April who do not have host families yet. If no families are found, they will have to defer or cancel their trip. So, if you were considering hosting a student and feel that you would like to do this sooner rather than later, please let me know and I will forward you the information. The three students are female and staying for 8 or 12 weeks.
If you and your family are interested in hosting a student from Spain or France, sometime this winter, please contact Mrs Grange via email (marilyn.grange@ccas.nsw.edu.au) for

Year 10 Incursion: A21
A21 is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking and modern-day slavery. In Australia, A21 works to raise awareness about human trafficking, provide support and care to survivors, and advocate for stronger laws and policies to combat trafficking. They also work with law enforcement agencies and other organizations to prevent trafficking and prosecute traffickers.
Two representatives from the organisation came to chat to our year 10 cohort as part of our i-link program. They spoke on March 14th, which is My Freedom Day—a student-driven event to raise awareness of modern slavery. For the 7th year, A21 is partnering with the CNN Freedom Project to help mobilise students across the world to raise their voices for freedom. During the incursion, students were asked to come up with innovative ways to raise awareness in their social groups at school for this cause.

CCAS Open Day will happen next week, Wednesday 27 March, from 3:45-6:00 pm.
It is an excellent opportunity for new families to explore what CCAS has to offer, and it is also a perfect time for you, our existing school families, to visit different areas and facilities around the school.
Come and check out our talented students performing at the Creative Arts showcase, which will be held at 4:45 pm at Naomi Frew Hall and feature students from Year 4 through Year 12.
