Principal's Update: Term 1, Week 6

This past week, our thoughts and prayers have been with the residents of North NSW and South Queensland, who are awaiting the impending arrival of Cyclone Alfred. By the time you read this we will know the full impact of this natural event – let’s hope it is not too devastating – but as of Friday afternoon we are already seeing the impact on communities with schools and businesses shut, public transport at a standstill and roads closed, evacuation orders in place and people bunkered down in anticipation of what nature is about to unleash.
We are fortunate to be outside the impact zone (my daughter lives on the North side of Brisbane, right in the path of Alfred if it holds its current path so we are watching things unfold with more than a casual interest), but even this far south we are anticipating some significant rain fall and coastal erosion from big seas. Regardless of the outcome we have much to be grateful for, and it is times like this we count our blessings and our school and community is certainly one of the blessings I hold dear - I am glad too that we have not been subjected to school closures – with all the uncertainty that this brings.
Let’s hope the week ahead brings a little more calmness and certainty for all. One casualty of the unpredictable weather is our cross country events that were scheduled for today as you will have already heard, it has been rescheduled for March 24.

CIS Primary Tennis
On Monday Kane R travelled to The Kings School to compete in the Primary CIS Tennis Championships.
It was a tough competition with the best tennis players from all NSW Independent Schools in attendance. Kane represented HRIS and CCAS with great energy, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship.
Even though he didn't walk away with the results he would have liked, he had a fantastic experience playing against tough competition.
Well done Kane!

Library: New To Our Collection

An exciting addition to our library this year, has been new magazine titles for students to borrow.
Some of our titles include - Wacky But True, Operation Ouch, National Geographic Kids, The School Magazine & Gigi.
The newest arrival is Australia’s No.1 Magazine for Young Horse Lovers, titled ‘HorseWyse’. This fabulous magazine is produced by the Delicata family who are part of our school community. They have very generously donated this magazine to our collection.
Thank you to the Delicata family for the kind contribution to our magazine collection.

Library: Encouraging Reading
Encouraging good reading habits is a critical element to ensure your child’s success later in life for both emotional and intellectual development.
We are always excited to see students discovering new books and enjoying our collection and this term has been busier than ever.
During library time, students have the opportunity to explore, select, and read at their own pace. We are always on hand ready to help, offer suggestions and encouraging students to explore new titles.
If your child is having difficulty finding a book that suits them, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m happy to work with them to select a "just right" book that will help foster a love of reading.
Borrowing books is a wonderful way to improve literacy, spark creativity, and promote well-being.
Please note:
- Library bags are essential for K-3 students to borrow, however if they have lost their CCAS bag they may bring a suitable substitute bag.
- Years 4-6 & High School can borrow without a library bag.

Year 10 Waste Management Fieldwork
Year 10 Geography students are currently undergoing a waste management assessment where they collect and assess raw data highlighting CCAS students' waste practices.
Students were required to separate rubbish into 4 categories; soft plastics, recyclables, organic matter, and other waste. They were surprised by what they discovered. Did you know that the bulk of waste in regular rubbish bins around the senior campus is recyclable?

Early Student Pickups
To ensure your child is ready to be collected early, please notify the school of your pickup time well in advance, and do not expect your child to be ready until this time. You can do this via phone call or email.
We ask for plenty of notice as staff may not have a phone in their classroom, or be able to check emails regularly and won't be aware of the details of students leaving. Giving us this notice avoids a last-minute scramble, prevents any confusion, and keeps everyone running on time (without having us run to collect your child!)
Please also ensure that students check out through Primary/High School Reception so that their leave is recorded.
Thank you in advance.

Student Achievement: Rory Gleeson
On Sunday Rory represented the Dolphins in the New South Wales Multiclass Swim Meet.
In his age group he came fourth in 50m freestyle (time was a PB), second in 50m backstroke and third in 100m backstroke! During the meet, they were able to meet Paralympian Tim Hodge.
Well done Rory!

Library: Ready For A Challenge?

The Annual NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge has started!
The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more, and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 10.
All Primary students at CCAS are automatically registered and participation is encouraged during Library classes.
2025 Challenge Dates
Challenge opens: Monday 24 February 2025
Challenge closes to students: Friday 22 August 2025
PLEASE NOTE:
All usernames and passwords have been reset for 2025. If you would like your child’s login information please contact us: library@ccas.nsw.edu.au

CCAS Exchange Program: Hosting A Student
Each year, CCAS welcomes exchange students through the ‘Students of the World’ Exchange program. Our CCAS students get to interact and build friendships with these students. For some of our early exchanges, these friendships have now spanned over a decade, with Australian families visiting the exchange family in their home country.

We are currently desperately looking for 1, 2, or 3 families willing to co-host a student from France.
Jeanne is 15 years old and is looking to improve her spoken English as she wants to study and later, work in tourism. Her dates are flexible but she is hoping to stay as long as possible between April and August.
If you feel your family could host her for 3-4 weeks, please let me know as soon as possible. If we have several families, she could stay a few weeks with each family and thus stay for longer than if only 1 family offers to host. Of course, if you are interested in hosting over a longer period, that would be great too! Jeanne’s family are also willing to host in return if that is of interest to you.
If you would like more information about Jeanne (before making a decision), please contact Mrs Grange via email or phone: marilyn.grange@ccas.nsw.edu.au / 0415 92 32 75 (text or leave a message and I will return your call)
